Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Wins Back-to-Back NBA MVP Awards
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander captured his second consecutive NBA MVP award after leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to another dominant regular season, joining an exclusive group of basketball legends.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder has won his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award, according to sources reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The official announcement will be made later this Sunday by the NBA at 7:30 p.m. ET through Prime Video.
Gilgeous-Alexander, the superstar leader of the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, becomes just the fifth active player to win back-to-back MVP awards. The others are Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and LeBron James, who achieved the feat twice during his careers with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.
At just 27 years old, Gilgeous-Alexander joins an elite historical group. Over the last 40 years, only seven players have won multiple NBA MVP awards before turning 28 years old. That exclusive list includes LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and now Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Every retired player who has won consecutive MVP awards has eventually been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. That legendary group includes Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Steve Nash, Moses Malone, and Tim Duncan.
The other finalists for this season’s MVP award were Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs. Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder are set to face Wembanyama and the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, beginning Monday night in Oklahoma City.
During the regular season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points per game while shooting a career-best 55.3% from the field. He also posted a career-high 6.6 assists per game and helped lead the Thunder to a league-best 64-18 record for the second consecutive season.
The reigning Finals MVP also earned the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year award this season. He led the league with 175 clutch points, defined as points scored during the final five minutes of games with a margin of five points or fewer. Additionally, he recorded 16 go-ahead field goals in clutch situations and finished with the NBA’s best clutch plus-minus rating at +93.
This marks the fourth straight season in which Gilgeous-Alexander has finished among the top five in MVP voting. He finished fifth in 2022-23, second in 2023-24, and has now won the award in back-to-back seasons.
Over that span, Gilgeous-Alexander also became the first player since Michael Jordan to average at least 30 points per game in four consecutive seasons.
