Why Was the US Open Final Delayed?
The much-anticipated US Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was delayed by 30 minutes due to strict security measures prompted by the attendance of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Extra security in New York
The men’s final at the US Open was originally scheduled to start at 2:00 PM local time at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but play began at 2:30 PM after organizers decided to extend entry times for fans amid reinforced security checks. The Secret Service and other federal agencies doubled controls at entrances to the National Tennis Center in Queens.
President Trump, invited to the Rolex sponsor box, was the key reason behind the enhanced protocol. The measures included additional screenings, heavy police presence, and sniffer dogs across the facility.
Rainy skies in New York added to the day’s atmosphere but did not impact the match, as the roof was closed. For many fans, like Brazilian tourists Daniela and Patricia, the showers were just an inconvenience solved with five-dollar ponchos. Meanwhile, the De la Rosa family from Mexico arrived prepared with umbrellas and humor, joking that “with tequila, everything is solved.”
A final with global anticipation
The clash between Alcaraz and Sinner was set to decide not only the US Open champion but also the top spot in the ATP rankings. The Spaniard had the chance to reclaim No. 1, while the Italian sought to extend his reign after 65 weeks at the summit.
Ticket prices reflected the magnitude of the occasion. In section 325, resale tickets ranged between $700 and $800, while courtside seats exceeded $12,000. With a capacity of 23,000, Arthur Ashe Stadium once again confirmed its status as the largest tennis arena in the world.
Protests outside the venue
Trump’s presence drew controversy beyond the courts. The activist group “Refuse Fascism” staged a protest outside the grounds, criticizing the president and accusing him of promoting violence and white supremacist rhetoric. The demonstrations added a political edge to an event typically defined by the mix of sport and entertainment.
