Nigeria begins its title defense

Nigeria arrives in Morocco as the leading force in African women’s soccer and with the responsibility of defending the title it won in the previous edition.

The Super Falcons have won the WAFCON ten times, more than any other team, and will begin a new campaign aiming to extend their continental dominance and secure qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Head coach Justine Madugu said his team is fully prepared, although he made it clear that Nigeria will not underestimate Malawi despite the difference in experience between the two sides.

Malawi prepares for a historic night

Malawi approaches the match with the excitement of competing in Africa’s premier women’s soccer tournament for the first time, but also with the determination to prove it did not travel to Morocco merely to participate.

The Scorchers qualified after defeating Angola and will look to bring the progress they have shown in recent years to the continental stage, including the first title in their history at the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Head coach Lovemore Fazili acknowledged Nigeria’s stature but said his players are ready to compete and cause an upset in their debut.

A clash between experience and ambition

Nigeria will look to control the match from the opening minutes and confirm its status as the favorite, while Malawi will aim to compete without fear and make the most of the speed and attacking ability of its leading players.

On paper, the match presents a clear contrast between a powerhouse accustomed to lifting trophies and a team only beginning to write its history in the tournament.
