Cristiano Ronaldo and the Conflicts That Have Defined His Career
Cristiano Ronaldo is once again at the center of controversy after leaving Portugal's training camp. These are some of the conflicts that have marked his career.
At 41 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo is once again under the spotlight.
The captain recently left Portugal's training camp after spending the entire match against Norway on the bench. Jorge Jesus later acknowledged that the forward was frustrated about not playing, although he denied that Cristiano had refused to train or that any incident of that nature had taken place.
Hours later, the player confirmed his departure after speaking with Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, and said he would explain his reasons at a later date. So far, neither Cristiano nor the Federation has publicly provided a full explanation of what happened.
However, this is far from the first time CR7 has found himself under intense scrutiny away from the pitch..
Rooney and an Unforgettable Image From Germany 2006
One of the first major episodes came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal faced England in the quarterfinals, and Wayne Rooney, then Cristiano Ronaldo's teammate at Manchester United, was sent off following an incident involving Ricardo Carvalho.
Cristiano approached the referee during the confrontation, and cameras later caught the Portuguese star winking toward his bench. The image sparked enormous controversy in England and raised questions about what would happen when the two players reunited at Manchester United.
Despite all the tension that summer, Rooney and Cristiano continued sharing the dressing room and later became key figures during one of the most successful periods in the English club's history. The Englishman has stated that they are not friends.
Mourinho and Cristiano Clashed at Real Madrid
The relationship between José Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo produced tremendous success at Real Madrid, but it also became increasingly strained.
Mourinho himself acknowledged after leaving the club that he had experienced problems with the forward when trying to correct certain tactical aspects of his game.
Years later, Luka Modrić recalled one of the most heated moments between the two in his autobiography. According to the Croatian, Mourinho confronted Cristiano during a Copa del Rey match for failing to track an opponent defensively.
The argument continued in the dressing room, and several teammates had to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating. The relationship between two of Real Madrid's most important figures deteriorated during the final stages of the Portuguese coach's time at the club.
The Ten Hag Clash That Ended His Time in Manchester
Perhaps one of the most difficult episodes of his career came during his second spell at Manchester United.
In October 2022, Erik ten Hag confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo had refused to come on as a substitute during a match against Tottenham Hotspur. The forward left the bench area before the match ended and was subsequently left out of the squad for the following fixture.
The situation completely broke down weeks later when Cristiano gave an interview in which he publicly criticized the club's management and made clear that his relationship with Ten Hag had deteriorated.
The outcome was immediate. On November 22, 2022, Manchester United officially announced that the Portuguese star would leave the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect.
Fernando Santos Benched Him in Qatar
Only a few weeks later, another unexpected situation unfolded, this time with Portugal.
Fernando Santos left Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting lineup against Switzerland in the Round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His replacement, Gonçalo Ramos, responded with a hat trick in a 6-1 victory.
Cristiano once again started on the bench in the quarterfinal against Morocco. He came on during the second half, but Portugal lost 1-0 and was eliminated from the tournament.
That decision ultimately marked the closing stages of Santos' tenure as national team coach. The manager later acknowledged that his relationship with Cristiano had been affected following the World Cup.
The Financial Battle With Juventus
Not all of his controversies have involved coaches or sporting decisions.
After leaving Juventus in 2021, Cristiano Ronaldo entered a financial dispute with the club over wages that had been deferred during the pandemic.
The Portuguese star was seeking approximately €19.5 million. In April 2024, an arbitration tribunal ruled that Juventus had to pay around €9.8 million, approximately half the amount requested by the player.
The dispute added a legal chapter to a spell in which Cristiano won trophies and scored more than 100 goals for the Italian club.

Cristiano Still Has to Explain His Portugal Departure
The focus has now returned to Portugal.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from the training camp, but the forward has yet to publicly explain all the reasons behind his decision. Jorge Jesus, meanwhile, has insisted that there was no refusal to train and has left open the possibility of discussing the situation in greater detail after this international window.
There has also been no official announcement regarding a potential international retirement. Cristiano Ronaldo has not said that his time with Portugal is over.
Rather than representing a definitive ending, this latest episode leaves another unanswered question in a career in which Cristiano has spent two decades surrounded by records and trophies, as well as constant attention both on and off the pitch.
