Courtois’ Incredible Record in the Champions League After Real Madrid’s Victory Over Manchester City
The Real Madrid goalkeeper broke a new record during the UEFA Champions League round of 16
A new chapter in the Champions League
Thibaut Courtois has gone down in UEFA Champions League history: the Belgian goalkeeper became the first goalkeeper to provide two goal assists in a single season.
Two assists from the goalkeeper
The first of these assists came on September 30, 2025, in the match against FC Kairat, when the goalkeeper made a long clearance from his area and the ball landed at the feet of French striker Kylian Mbappé, who managed to control Courtois’s pass and convert it into a goal. The second assist came much more recently, during the match against Manchester City, when Courtois made a similar play, clearing the ball, and it landed at the feet of hat-trick scorer Federico Valverde, who finished the play with a goal.
A new page in history
This event is highly unusual, considering that goalkeepers are generally focused on their defensive duties and do not play a significant role in game construction; therefore, they do not typically contribute to statistics such as assists or goals. With this achievement, Courtois has gone down in the history of Europe’s premier competition as the only goalkeeper to provide two assists in the same season.
