A new chapter in the Champions League

Thibaut Courtois has gone down in  UEFA Champions League history: the Belgian goalkeeper became the first goalkeeper to provide two goal assists in a single season.

Two assists from the goalkeeper

The first of these assists came on September 30, 2025, in the match against FC Kairat, when the goalkeeper made a long clearance from his area and the ball landed at the feet of French striker Kylian Mbappé, who managed to control Courtois’s pass and convert it into a goal. ​The second assist came much more recently, during the match against Manchester City, when Courtois made a similar play, clearing the ball, and it landed at the feet of hat-trick scorer Federico Valverde, who finished the play with a goal.

A new page in history

This event is highly unusual, considering that goalkeepers are generally focused on their defensive duties and do not play a significant role in game construction; therefore, they do not typically contribute to statistics such as assists or goals. ​With this achievement, Courtois has gone down in the history of Europe’s premier competition as the only goalkeeper to provide two assists in the same season.
