Vinícius Wants to Win Champions League and Copa America, and Ballon d'Or?
Vinícius Junior will prioritize winning the Champions League and Copa America, leaving the Ballon d'Or for someone else.
Brazilian Vinícius Junior is putting team success over individual glory, saying he'd rather win the Champions League with Real Madrid and the Copa America with Brazil, "and the Ballon d'Or for Toni Kroos," and hoped for a Jude Bellingham goal in the final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
"I'd sign for winning the Champions League final and the Copa America, and the Ballon d'Or for Toni Kroos because it's his last season. He understands that we're sad about his decision," he said during Real Madrid's open media day before the Champions League final.
"It's a beautiful award because you work all your life to become one of the best players in the world, play against the best, and for such a big club. We have to focus on the final and then we'll see who wins the Ballon d'Or," he added.
Vinícius hopes to score in another final, just like he did in Paris against Liverpool to give Real Madrid their last Champions League title, and joked about being the best as his teammates often tell him.
"We always think about winning, hopefully, I can score, but the most important thing is always to win. I'm happy to be here because coming from Brazil is very tough. Not everyone can play for this club, train with so many legends, and have moments like Toni's farewell. I'm very happy to play for Real Madrid. The unity of this team makes me happy. My teammates always tell me I'm the best and I end up believing it," he joked.
Vinícius praised Kroos, who will play his last match for Real Madrid on Saturday after winning 22 titles in ten years, becoming one of the club's legends.
"We say we have to play for Toni because it's his last match with us. He's a much better person than a player. He's been important for the club and for us young players who have come in. We watched him on TV, and being able to see everything he does… he deserves Saturday's tribute, and now we have to give him the Champions League," he said.
And he wished for a goal from Jude Bellingham against his former team in the final: "We have to play our game. Since Jude (Bellingham) arrived, we've understood each other well. I'm very happy he joined us, he's having a great season, and hopefully, he can score a goal in the final."
With one match left to close the season, the Brazilian forward reflected on a season where he dealt with multiple injuries before ending on a high note.
"The start was very tough because of the injuries and everything I went through. But you have to take the good from the bad, and the injury made me a better player because I had time to train and watch games. I had time for myself. It was a tough season, but I prepared my mind to be at my best in the second half. I've prepared well and feel I'm in my best form," he said.
He also highlighted Carlo Ancelotti's role in giving him freedom to move, leaving the left wing and appearing in the number 9 area, movements he learned from Karim Benzema. "I watched Karim because he moved out of the box a lot, and I looked up to him as an idol. Training with him every day taught me a lot," he noted.
"I thank Ancelotti for changing my position because I never imagined playing there. At first, I told him I didn't want to play there, but he convinced me and made me a better player since he arrived. He has a lot of confidence in me, and I have confidence in him for changing my position," he added.
"I had to watch a lot of videos on how the center backs play because they're stronger than me. It's been a very beautiful season, and I've evolved in one year like never before. I've completely changed the way I play, and I'm very happy with it," he concluded.
