Benfica return with Porto setting the pace

Benfica return to Liga Portugal action on Monday after going two weeks without playing a league match. Their Matchday 3 fixture against Moreirense was postponed due to European commitments, and the Eagles now welcome Estoril Praia to the Estádio da Luz.

Marco Silva’s side opened the campaign with a draw against Académico de Viseu before responding emphatically with a 7-0 demolition of Casa Pia. With two games in hand, Benfica currently sit seventh and need to start collecting points to prevent the teams above them from creating an early gap.

The Eagles have plenty of momentum on their side. Benfica have won three consecutive matches across all competitions and are coming off a 3-1 away victory over Aarhus that secured their place in the UEFA Europa League league phase. They have scored 28 goals in eight matches this season.

Estoril look to turn around a difficult start

Things have been very different for Estoril. The Canaries have collected just one point from their opening three matches, drawing 1-1 with Famalicão before suffering consecutive 2-0 defeats against Nacional and Rio Ave.

Vasco Matos’ side sit 16th and now face one of the toughest away trips in Portuguese football. A positive result in Lisbon could provide the spark they need after beginning the campaign without a victory.

As for team news, Fredrik Aursnes is a doubt for Benfica after suffering an ankle sprain that also kept him out of their midweek European fixture. Jaden Umeh remains sidelined with a right thigh injury. For Estoril, Jordan Holsgrove remains doubtful with a muscular problem, while Xeka is available again after serving his suspension.

History is firmly on Benfica’s side

The head-to-head record illustrates the scale of Estoril’s challenge. The Canaries have managed only five victories in 69 meetings between the two clubs.

Benfica once went more than 50 matches without losing to Estoril between 1950 and January 2024. That remarkable run eventually ended in a penalty shootout in the Allianz Cup semifinals, but it did not take long for the Eagles to reestablish their dominance.

Benfica have won the last five meetings between the teams and 10 of the previous 11. They recorded 3-1 victories both home and away last season, further underlining a matchup that has historically favored the Lisbon giants.

Another chance to stay in the title race

Benfica are preparing for just their second home league game of the season and cannot afford too many early setbacks if they want to remain firmly in the title race.

The seven-goal performance against Casa Pia demonstrated their attacking potential, while their recent European results have added confidence ahead of their return to domestic competition. Vangelis Pavlidis, Rafa, Georgiy Sudakov and Gianluca Prestianni are among the attacking options capable of exploiting an Estoril side that has struggled in the opening weeks.

For the visitors, the challenge will be surviving Benfica’s spells of pressure and finding opportunities to punish the hosts when they appear. For the Eagles, Monday represents another opportunity to turn their games in hand into valuable ground in the standings.
