Pep Guardiola Learns His Punishment After Latest FA Cup Incident
A heated moment on the sideline ended up carrying consequences for Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City manager now knows the punishment he will face after his latest protest.
A tense moment that led to a sanction
The temperament of Pep Guardiola once again became a talking point during Manchester City’s 3–1 victory over Newcastle in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The Catalan manager lost his composure on the sideline, and his reaction ultimately came with consequences.
The incident occurred when the coach strongly protested to the fourth official over a challenge between Kieran Trippier and Jeremy Doku, an action Guardiola believed was clearly a foul. The argument resulted in a yellow card for the manager, which at first seemed like just another heated moment during an intense match.
However, that booking turned out to be more significant than it initially appeared.
The sixth yellow that triggered the punishment
The yellow card shown to Guardiola was his sixth of the season, a number that automatically activates a suspension under the regulations in English football. As a result, the manager must now serve a two-match ban.
This means the Manchester City boss will have to watch those games from the stands, unable to manage his team directly from the bench during those fixtures.
The suspension only applies to domestic competitions. Guardiola will therefore miss the upcoming Premier League match against West Ham, as well as the FA Cup quarterfinal, scheduled for the weekend of April 4–5 against an opponent that will be determined after the draw.
The matches he will still be able to coach
Despite the suspension, the punishment does not extend to international competitions.
That means Guardiola will still be able to lead Manchester City from the bench in their European clashes against Real Madrid, as well as in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal scheduled for March 22.
Because of that limitation in the sanction, the overall sporting impact is somewhat reduced, although the club will still need to adapt during those two domestic matches without their manager on the touchline.
Guardiola reacts with irony
After the match, Guardiola explained the reason behind his protest and defended his reaction to the play involving Jeremy Doku.
The manager argued that Doku had already beaten Trippier and was heading toward the penalty area when he was brought down from behind. According to Guardiola, he was not asking for a yellow card—only that the foul be called.
With his usual sense of irony, the coach also joked about the situation. Guardiola pointed out that Manchester City already holds every record in English football, and now he apparently has another one: the manager with the most yellow cards.
He even joked about the suspension itself, saying that he would take the two matches off and “go on vacation.” Meanwhile, City will have to navigate two important domestic games without their leader on the sidelines.
