Haaland Leads City Comeback To Conquer Anfield
With a goal and an assist from the Norwegian, Manchester City came from behind to beat Liverpool 2–1 at Anfield, a crucial victory to stay alive in the Premier League title race.
The match kicked off at a frantic pace. In the very first minute, Haaland had the chance to open the scoring in a one-on-one, but Alisson pulled off a spectacular save that the home crowd celebrated like a goal. Liverpool responded in the 25th minute with a clear-cut chance for Mohamed Salah, who fired just wide with his right foot following an assist from Alexis Mac Allister.
The Reds emerged for the second period intent on finding the opener. Fifty-one minutes in, Hugo Ekitiké went for the far corner with a first-time strike, only to be denied by a composed save from Donnarumma. The Frenchman was presented with another golden opportunity shortly after via a sublime Salah assist, but he couldn't keep his header on target as it whistled past the post.
The home side’s dominance finally paid off. Following a set piece, Dominik Szoboszlai once again showcased his world-class execution: a precise, curling strike that left Donnarumma rooted to the spot and made it 1-0 for Liverpool. City's response was swift. True to the DNA of Guardiola’s sides, the visitors stayed composed and found the equalizer through Haaland, who headed down a cross for the late arrival of Bernardo Silva to make it 1-1.
The finish was electric. Just as a draw seemed certain, City were awarded a late penalty and Haaland made no mistake: a clinical strike to make it 2-1. It was the Norwegian's first-ever goal at Anfield and the crowning moment of his performance. Yet the drama wasn't over. Mac Allister came inches away from an equalizer with a powerful drive that Donnarumma somehow kept out with an incredible save. In the dying moments, with Alisson up for the attack, Cherki led a counter-attack and fired from distance into the empty net. Following a chaotic scramble and a scuffle between Szoboszlai and Haaland, the ball ended up in the net, but the goal was chalked off after a VAR review and the Hungarian was shown a red card.
With this victory, Manchester City move within six points of leaders Arsenal, keeping their Premier League title hopes alive.
