Arne Slot Admits Mistakes After Liverpool’s Disappointing Season
The Dutch manager admitted he did not always make the right decisions and described Liverpool’s difficult campaign with one word: “injuries”.
Liverpool’s 2025-26 season ended in deep disappointment, and Arne Slot did not avoid responsibility. After finishing fifth in the Premier League, the Dutch manager openly admitted that he made important mistakes during a campaign filled with injuries, internal tensions, and inconsistent performances.
The 1-1 draw against Brentford in the final match perfectly summed up Liverpool’s troubled season: unstable, emotionally drained, and far below expectations after winning the league the previous year.
“I have not been perfect,” Slot admitted honestly. “As a manager you can never be perfect, and not every decision you make turns out to be the right one.”
One of the biggest controversies of the season involved his relationship with Mohamed Salah. Slot’s decision to bench the Egyptian star during Liverpool’s disastrous winter run created public tension between the two and ultimately accelerated Salah’s departure from the club.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Salah still managed to leave on a historic note. In his final appearance, he surpassed Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s all-time Premier League assist leader with 93 assists.
Beyond the footballing issues, Slot identified injuries as the defining problem of the season. “If I had to describe this year with one word, it would be ‘injury’,” he explained.
The numbers support his claim. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed 20 matches, record signing Alexander Isak started only eight league games, while important players such as Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo also spent long periods sidelined.
The squad additionally had to cope with the emotional trauma caused by the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car accident last summer, a heartbreaking event that deeply affected the team throughout the campaign.
Liverpool now head into a crucial summer facing major questions about Arne Slot’s future and the urgent need to rebuild both the squad and the club’s mentality.
