Orlando City Refuses to Wait and Pushes Hard for Antoine Griezmann Signing
MLS is pushing the timeline forward. But in Madrid, the season is far from over.
An Unexpected March Offensive
Orlando City has stepped up efforts to sign Antoine Griezmann within days or weeks, according to The Athletic. The MLS club is targeting a marquee Designated Player, and the Atlético de Madrid forward has emerged as its top choice.
The Florida-based franchise is hoping to finalize a deal before the MLS transfer window closes on March 26. This is not simply a summer plan — it’s an aggressive move aimed at landing him immediately.
A Complicated Timing for Atlético
The timing, however, presents a major obstacle. Atlético de Madrid is entering the most critical stretch of its season. Diego Simeone’s side is preparing for the second leg of its Champions League playoff against Club Brugge, as well as a Copa del Rey semifinal clash with Barcelona.
With so much still on the line, an immediate departure appears unlikely. Logically, any potential move would seem more realistic in the summer once Atlético’s campaign concludes.

The MLS Dream and a Binding Contract
Griezmann has never hidden his desire to eventually finish his career in the United States. Still, he remains under contract with Atlético until 2027, meaning any transfer would require significant negotiation.
Orlando’s leadership has reportedly traveled to Madrid multiple times in an effort to persuade the French forward. There are also indications that the club may hold MLS priority rights should the opportunity formally arise.
Simeone Counts on Him Until the End
Amid the speculation, Diego Simeone made it clear that he considers Griezmann essential through the end of the season. The Argentine coach described him as a club legend, alongside Koke, emphasizing that his importance will not diminish regardless of minutes played.
The timing of the report is striking, coming as Atlético faces decisive fixtures in Europe and domestic competition. While Orlando dreams of securing his signature now, Madrid remains focused on trophies.
Griezmann’s future may point toward MLS. For now, though, his present remains firmly tied to Atlético.
