MLS Clears Messi After Incident Following LAFC Match
A viral video sparked controversy after Inter Miami’s loss, but MLS clarified the situation involving the Argentine star.
MLS has put an end to the controversy surrounding Lionel Messi after a video circulated on social media following Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat to LAFC. The footage appeared to show the World Cup champion heading toward the referees’ area after the match, prompting speculation about a possible violation of league rules.
However, after reviewing the situation, the league determined that the Argentine did not breach any disciplinary regulations.
The video that triggered the review
The incident came to light after the match at the Memorial Coliseum, when Lionel Messi was seen walking toward the area where the match officials were located. In the video, teammate Luis Suárez can also be seen attempting to dissuade him from proceeding further.
The images raised questions about whether the Inter Miami captain had entered the referees’ locker room to dispute decisions made during the match.
However, Chris Rivett, communications director for the Professional Referee Organization, confirmed that the Argentine never entered a restricted area.
After consulting with the match officials, it was determined that the door Messi approached did not lead to the referees’ locker room or any restricted zone, but rather to a separate stadium access point.
Potential sanctions he could have faced
Had misconduct been confirmed, Lionel Messi could have faced significant disciplinary action. MLS regulations allow suspensions of up to three matches for verbal abuse or intimidating confrontations with referees.
Recent cases highlight the league’s strict stance. Defender Matt Miazga, of FC Cincinnati, received a three-match suspension and an undisclosed fine after entering the referees’ locker room following a match against New York Red Bulls.
MLS consistently protects the authority of match officials, making violations in this area a serious matter.
Messi cleared and available for the Clásico del Sol
Despite the controversy, the investigation concluded without sanctions. Messi has been cleared and will be available for Inter Miami’s next match.
The Argentine star is expected to feature in the upcoming “Clásico del Sol” against Orlando City, a matchup that gains added importance following the heavy loss to LAFC.
The episode underscores the intense media spotlight surrounding Messi in every appearance. Even ambiguous situations quickly draw global attention. This time, the official review dispelled doubts and confirmed that Inter Miami’s captain did not violate league rules.
