Inter Miami Confident Lionel Messi Will Be in the Squad Against Orlando City in Leagues Cup Semifinals
Inter Miami could receive major news tomorrow: the return of Lionel Messi to the matchday squad. After missing recent games due to physical discomfort, the Argentine completed Tuesday’s training session without issues, and the coaching staff is optimistic ahead of the Leagues Cup semifinal against Orlando City.
Messi close to making his comeback
Assistant coach Javier Morales, who will lead the team with Javier Mascherano suspended, explained in a press conference that the final decision will be made just hours before kickoff. “We hope he’ll be in the squad, and we’ll confirm it tomorrow,” Morales said, suggesting Messi has a strong chance of being available.
Messi picked up a right leg injury during the August 2 clash against Necaxa and has since missed four straight matches. Though he briefly returned against the LA Galaxy on August 17, a setback sidelined him again in the following fixtures.
The anticipation surrounding his return is huge, especially with Inter aiming to defend the title they won in 2023—the club’s first-ever trophy—just weeks after Messi’s arrival.
Jordi Alba also a doubt
Another player whose status is uncertain is Jordi Alba. The Spanish full-back also trained with the group on Tuesday but remains doubtful after a knee knock sustained in the quarterfinals against Tigres. His absence in the last MLS game against D.C. United raised concerns, though Morales assured his recovery is progressing well.
Should both Messi and Alba be available, Inter would gain valuable solidity and experience for a crucial encounter. The semifinal is not just a chance to reach another final but also an opportunity to further solidify their status as one of the most competitive clubs in the region, in a tournament that pits MLS against Liga MX.
A decisive clash at home
The game will be played in Miami, adding special significance for the fans, who are eager to see Messi leading the team again. The matchup with Orlando City represents the last hurdle before a potential final that could further strengthen the club’s recent history and highlight Messi’s influence on every step of the project.
Inter Miami head into this semifinal with renewed confidence. If Messi and Alba are fit, the dream of repeating the 2023 title is once again alive in Florida.
