VIDEO | Messi and Suárez Bag Brace to Lead Inter Miami to Victory Against Orlando City
Inter Miami had a field day at home against Orlando City, thrashing them 5-0 on Saturday with a brace from Luis Suárez, who opened his scoring account for the MLS season, and two more goals from Lionel Messi.
The Uruguayan created chances and provided two assists. This result marks the highest number of goals scored by Inter Miami against Orlando City in their brief history of rivalry.
Under Gerardo Martino's management, they've secured seven points out of nine possible in the start of the MLS regular season, with both home games ending in victories.
The intense rivalry and close matches between both teams in their recent Florida derbies were nullified by two early goals from the hosts, both by Luis Suárez to kickstart his MLS tally.
Just three minutes in, Messi served it to the right for Gressel, who found Suárez completely unmarked in the heart of the box, smashing it first-time with power, with his right foot, and tucked it in close to the post, leaving Gallese with no chance.
The Uruguayan was fired up, heavily involved in midfield playmaking, and not only did he score in the tenth minute, but he also orchestrated it.
First, linking up with Jordi Alba, then dribbling through Orlando defenders, and finally playing a quick one-two, again with Gressel, who set him up perfectly to slot it home inside the box, this time with his left foot, showcasing versatility.
Suárez could have completed his hat-trick in the 28th minute when he was left alone against Gallese, but he opted to assist Taylor for an easy finish. The match was effectively over with the home side's efficiency and the visitors' lack of response.
Messi sought his first goal from a set-piece but hit the post. The anticipation was whether the Argentine could celebrate a goal for the first time this season in front of his home crowd, and that would have to wait until the second half.
In the second half, Miami had two clear chances to score next. First Messi from outside the box after another Orlando turnover, the second was from Gressel, this time the one-two with Suárez was reversed, and the American hit the crossbar.
Orlando surrendered in the match, while Gerardo Martino's side continued to hunt for goals until they found them. It took until the 56th minute for one of the best plays of the night.
Alba carried the ball 50 meters and combined with Suárez, with another one-two he found himself alone and tried to finish stylishly, but was denied by Jansson, whose clearance hit the crossbar and fell to a ruthless Messi, who calmly put it away while being held by Schlegel.
The Chase Stadium crowd demanded the fifth goal, which came in the 61st minute. Diego Gómez initiated the play, Suárez crossed from the left, and Messi headed from afar, chipping and crossing the ball past a frustrated Gallese.
Orlando City's closest to danger was when Muriel received the ball inside the small box, which happened 20 minutes before the end, but Callender was relentless and didn't allow him to shoot.
Enrique, who came on late, nearly beat Callender with a powerful shot that the American goalkeeper stretched and saved low.
With time running out, Messi was brought down at the edge of the box and took the free-kick, but he sent it too high.
