Gio Reyna From USMNT Regains Prominence in France and Finds Consistency Again

Giovanni Reyna, a United States international, has found the opportunity he needed in France’s Ligue 1 to revive a career that had appeared to stall. At 23 years old, the American midfielder has moved on from a difficult spell in Germany and is now looking to prove with RC Strasbourg that he can still become the player who was once regarded as one of the top young prospects of his generation.

A FRESH START

Reyna joined RC Strasbourg in August 2026 from Borussia Mönchengladbach in a deal worth around €3 million, signing a contract through 2031. The move represents a significant opportunity for a player who needed regular playing time after several seasons disrupted by injuries and limited involvement.

Through his first five Ligue 1 appearances, Reyna has featured in every match, including four starts and 308 minutes played. He has also already scored his first goal for the club in Strasbourg’s emphatic 6-2 win over Troyes, providing an encouraging early sign as he begins his new chapter in France.

FROM DORTMUND’S NEXT BIG STAR TO A CAREER FILLED WITH OBSTACLES

Reyna’s career took a far more difficult turn than expected after his breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund. At just 17 years old, he was already a regular with the German club’s first team and was widely regarded as one of the biggest talents in American soccer.

However, muscle injuries began to disrupt his development. Between mid-2022 and the end of the 2024-25 season, Reyna started just seven Bundesliga matches over a 30-month span. A loan spell at Nottingham Forest failed to significantly change his situation.

He later joined Borussia Mönchengladbach, but he again struggled to find the consistency and playing time he needed. Last season, he played only around 500 minutes, recording one goal and one assist.

THE CONSISTENCY REYNA HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR

One of Reyna’s main goals at Strasbourg is to regain something that injuries took away from him for years: consistent playing time and competitive rhythm.

The American midfielder has acknowledged that he needs to rack up minutes to rediscover his best form, and the numbers are beginning to back him up. Between late August and early October, Reyna made seven consecutive starts for club and country, a career-best run at that point. He then made it eight straight starts with the United States.

In France, head coach Hugo Oliveira has also shown confidence in him. Reyna has been deployed as one of the central midfielders in a 4-3-3 formation, becoming an increasingly important piece of Strasbourg’s project.

THE USMNT IS ALSO PART OF REYNA’S COMEBACK

Reyna’s resurgence goes beyond Ligue 1. The midfielder remains an important player for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), with whom he competed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and scored against Paraguay.

During the most recent FIFA international window, Reyna also made an impact under Mauricio Pochettino. He recorded two assists in three matches, along with seven key passes and an 85% pass-completion rate, numbers that highlight his growing influence on the game.

After years in which injuries and limited playing time slowed his development, Gio Reyna appears to have found at Strasbourg the setting for a fresh start. Ligue 1 is giving him the consistency, confidence and project he needs to once again feel like a key player.

The comeback is only beginning, but the American is already showing early signs that the highly touted prospect who shined at Borussia Dortmund still has a story left to write.

THE KEY FACTORS BEHIND GIO REYNA’S COMEBACK

  • A FRESH START: Reyna has found at Strasbourg an opportunity to relaunch his career.
  • MORE CONSISTENCY: The American is regaining playing time and a bigger role after several seasons disrupted by injuries.
  • USMNT GOAL: His strong run in France is also strengthening his role with the United States heading into the next World Cup cycle.
