Marseille Inflict More Pain on Lyon with Convincing Win
Marseille extended their recent improvement, bringing them closer to the European zone with a convincing 3-0 victory over Lyon. Lyon suffered their third consecutive defeat, remaining entrenched at the bottom of the league standings.
In the rescheduled match of Ligue 1's tenth round, initially postponed due to incidents outside the Velodrome involving Marseille ultras attacking the opposing team's bus, Gennaro Gattuso's side continued their ascent. They are now just two points behind Lens in the sixth position, which marks the European zone.
Lyon's fortunes did not improve with the coaching change. In Pierre Sage's second game as Fabio Grosso's replacement, Lyon still couldn't secure a win. They find themselves five points adrift of the second-to-last Lorient, in the relegation play-off spot. Further away, at six points, is the safety line currently occupied by Strasbourg.
Following their victory against Stade Rennes four matches ago, Lyon has once again hit a downturn. Within the first 30 minutes, they found themselves two goals down. In the 21st minute, Portuguese player Vitinha opened the scoring with a swift counter, slotting the ball into an empty net after receiving a pass from Jordan Veretout. In the 26th minute, a left-sided cross from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang resulted in a header into the net by Panamanian Michael Murillo, marking his first goal for the team.
The match was sealed in the 56th minute as Aubameyang, assisted by Vitinha, found the back of the net. Marseille continued their positive trajectory while Lyon's struggles persist.
