Yan Diomande Rejects Superstar Label at Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s big-money signing is trying to stay above the noise surrounding his first months in Spain and has made clear how he is handling the enormous expectations.
Yan Diomande has only been at Real Madrid for a few months, but expectations around him are already enormous. The Ivorian arrived from RB Leipzig for €125 million plus €15 million in add-ons, a deal that made him the most expensive African player in history.
His start, however, has been far more measured than the hype surrounding his transfer. The 19-year-old has featured in eight competitive matches but started just two, as he tries to carve out a role in a squad packed with competition.
Diomande insists that situation has not changed his approach. Speaking to NCI, in comments picked up by Trivela and GOAL, he explained that he is trying to distance himself from the labels that inevitably come with such a huge transfer.
“Forget the Superstar Story”
Asked about his new level of attention, the winger delivered a particularly direct response.
“It’s always good. Forget the superstar story, I’m still the same person I’ve always been. Maybe I am for you, but for me I’m still the same person,” he said.
The message comes at a time when every appearance from the young forward is beginning to be judged against the size of his transfer fee. Diomande, however, does not want his development in Madrid to be defined by that label.
The pressure does not appear to bother him either. For the Ivorian, competing at a club with such demanding standards is precisely an opportunity to keep pushing himself to improve.
Full Confidence in Mourinho
His adaptation also involves his relationship with José Mourinho. Diomande highlighted the communication he has with the coach and said he feels supported despite not yet enjoying regular starts.
The Portuguese coach had already called for patience around the winger during the opening weeks of the season, when Madrid’s huge investment quickly turned Diomande’s minutes — or lack of them — into a talking point.
Diomande appears comfortable with that competition. His priority, he explained, is to maintain his intensity in training and be ready whenever opportunities arrive.
Ivory Coast Remains His Refuge
The latest international window also gave him a chance to briefly step away from everything surrounding his arrival at the Bernabéu. Diomande said he feels particularly comfortable whenever he returns to Ivory Coast.
Representing his country carries a different meaning for him and allows him to reset away from the daily pressure of fighting for a place at Real Madrid.
He will now return to Spain facing the same challenge he had at the start of the season: earn more minutes, gradually justify Madrid’s huge investment and do it without allowing the “superstar” label to define his path.
Diomande’s Message
- The Ivorian rejected the idea that his big-money move has changed how he sees himself.
- He has played eight competitive matches, making just two starts, during his adaptation to Real Madrid.
- Diomande says he feels backed by Mourinho and ready to keep fighting for more minutes.
