Who Is Álvaro Carreras? Get to Know Real Madrid’s New Signing
Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Álvaro Carreras, the 22-year-old left-back who returns to the club where he developed as a youth. The Spanish defender joins from Benfica after the LaLiga giants activated his €50 million release clause. He signs a long-term deal until June 30, 2031.
Where has he played before rejoining Los Blancos?
Carreras spent three years at La Fábrica (2017–2020) before moving to Manchester United in 2020. During his time in England, he was loaned out to Preston North End in the Championship and later returned to Spain on loan to Granada.
In January 2024, he joined Benfica on loan, where he quickly impressed. The Portuguese club made the move permanent in July 2024, and Carreras finished the season with 32 appearances, 3 goals, and standout performances—especially in the Champions League, including a notable match against Barcelona. He also helped Benfica win the Taça da Liga (Portuguese League Cup).
Why did Real Madrid sign him?
Carreras fits the mold of the modern full-back: fast, technically sound, effective in both attacking and defensive phases, and capable of playing in a back four or as a wing-back. His ability to deliver precise crosses and track back with speed suits Xabi Alonso’s tactical plans.
Real Madrid needed reinforcements on the left flank following inconsistent performances from Fran García and persistent injuries to Ferland Mendy. Carreras, a homegrown talent and Spanish national, aligns with the club’s strategy of recruiting young, locally-developed players with international experience.
What are the club’s plans for him?
Carreras has signed a six-year deal and will be unveiled at Ciudad Real Madrid on Tuesday at 1:00 PM, alongside Florentino Pérez. He becomes Real Madrid’s fourth signing of the summer, joining Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono.
The plan is for him to immediately compete for minutes with the first team. His Spanish nationality also helps with LaLiga’s registration rules, making him a strategic addition for the squad.
