Mbappé’s Injury Raises Concern Ahead of Spanish Super Cup
Kylian Mbappé trains at Valdebebas as his participation in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup remains in doubt
French forward Kylian Mbappé, star of Real Madrid, trained on Monday at the gym of the Valdebebas training complex to assess the progress of the left knee sprain he suffered at the start of 2026. The goal is to determine whether he will be included in the squad for the 2026 Spanish Super Cup, with a final decision expected on Tuesday after a last fitness test.
Since December 30, when Mbappé experienced knee discomfort during Real Madrid’s open training session at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium, the forward had not resumed any physical activity.
Mbappé’s intense physiotherapy treatment was complemented on Monday with his first gym exercises, an initial test to evaluate his recovery. According to club sources cited by EFE, the final decision regarding his availability for the Spanish Super Cup will be made on Tuesday, during Real Madrid’s last training session before traveling to Saudi Arabia.
The Madrid side will face Atlético de Madrid on Thursday, January 8, in the tournament semifinals. While Mbappé’s chances of playing are limited, his participation is not completely ruled out, as confirmed by his coach Xabi Alonso following the French forward’s absence against Real Betis.
"He is not completely ruled out. We will wait until Tuesday to assess how he feels and then make the final decision, but we are keeping all options open with Kylian Mbappé," Alonso said.
