Mbappé Joins Cristiano Ronaldo and Other Madrid Legends on an Exclusive List
Real Madrid needed a statement performance to escape their bleakest stretch of the season, and the player built for nights like this delivered: Kylian Mbappé. The French star, coming off three matches without scoring and under intense media pressure, produced a monumental display in Athens to lead the comeback against Olympiacos.
Four goals, in a moment of maximum demand, returned him to his best form and propelled him into a group reserved for the chosen few in the club’s history.
Mbappé didn’t just secure a crucial win. He carved his name alongside figures that define the very DNA of Real Madrid.
A Historic Four-Goal Haul: Mbappé Enters the White Olympus
With a full arsenal of offensive brilliance and ruthless finishing, Mbappé completed a four-goal performance that places him next to three icons who defined eras: Cristiano Ronaldo, Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo Di Stéfano. Until last night, they were the only Real Madrid players ever to score four goals in a European Cup match.
The precedents are museum pieces:
- Cristiano did it against Malmö in 2015-16.
- Puskás achieved it twice, vs Feyenoord (1965-66) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1959-60).
- Di Stéfano also recorded two four-goal displays, vs Wiener (1958-59) and Sevilla (1957-58).
Now, Mbappé joins the club. And he does so under a completely different context: he arrived to be an immediate leader, and he is delivering. He now has 22 goals this season, nine of them in the Champions League in just five matches, already surpassing his best European numbers with PSG.
A Collective Showcase and a Message From Xabi Alonso
Even though the night belonged to him, Mbappé wasn’t alone. Vinicius Junior assisted the opener with a magical outside-of-the-foot pass and played a key role in the fourth goal with an individual run that broke Olympiacos. Arda Güler and Eduardo Camavinga provided the remaining assists in what was a collective performance the team desperately needed after several setbacks.
After the match, Xabi Alonso didn’t hide his admiration:
“The names he matches are part of this club’s history. I’m very happy for him. I value much more than the goals: his leadership, his influence and the way he speaks to the team before matches. He deserves it.”
Mbappé had already scored four goals in a single match back in 2018 with PSG against Olympique Lyon, but what happened in Athens sits on a different level. He did it wearing white, in the Champions League and in a critical moment. He did it as a leader, a reference point and the natural heir to a lineage of legends.
