Barça Goes All In for João Cancelo
João Cancelo’s performances since returning to Barcelona have been outstanding. Hansi Flick has requested that the player stay, and the club’s board is willing to do everything possible to retain him; however, it will not be easy.
A Key Piece in Flick’s System
The Portuguese defender returned to Barça in January on loan from Al Hilal to cover for the injured Alejandro Balde. In recent months, the full-back has shown an impressive level, and his ability to play on both flanks and in multiple positions makes him an ideal fit for the club. Once Balde returns, Cancelo can operate in other areas of the pitch, something that perfectly suits Flick’s system.
The Financial Obstacle
The main issue is financial. Barcelona cannot afford the Portuguese player’s wages, as he is owned by Al Hilal, where his salary is quite high. Given this situation, Barça could ask the player to make a sacrifice: reduce his salary, request a contract termination, and arrive as a free agent.
Barcelona is still unable to make big signings due to its financial situation and would not be willing to pay around €30 million for the full-back. Cancelo is under contract with Al Hilal until 2027, and there is no purchase option in the loan deal. Even so, Barça is eager to keep the player and is exploring different alternatives to make it happen.

The Player’s Will and the Board’s Support
The Portuguese international is highly committed to the team and has stated that he will give everything for the club until the end of his loan spell. His intention is to stay, and it is possible that he could give up part of his high salary at Al Hilal to continue his career with FC Barcelona.
Deco has expressed confidence that Cancelo will remain, highlighting that he is a player who prioritizes the sporting project over financial matters. At Barcelona, they will do everything possible to retain him, and the player is willing to make sacrifices. It remains to be seen whether both sides can find the right formula to secure his stay.
