Aubameyang Matches Historic Zlatan Ibrahimovic Record in LaLiga
It took 17 years for someone to do it again. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in Deportivo La Coruña’s 1-1 draw against Getafe at the Coliseum, extending his scoring streak to five consecutive matches to start the season.
No player had scored in each of the first five matchdays of a LaLiga season since Zlatan Ibrahimovic did it with Barcelona in 2009.
Now Aubameyang has matched that feat.
And he has done it while establishing himself as the main attacking reference for a Deportivo side that has just returned to the top flight and remains unbeaten.
Five Matchdays, and Aubameyang Always Delivers
The striker began the season by scoring against Elche before finding the net again against Málaga, Valencia, and Villarreal.
On Matchday 5, his team needed him once again.
Getafe took the lead during the second half at the Coliseum, putting Deportivo in danger of suffering its first defeat of the season.
The response came in the 78th minute.
Yeremy Pino found space to deliver a cross into the box, and Aubameyang attacked the ball to head home the equalizer for 1-1.
It was more than just his fifth goal of the season.
The goal also extended the Galician side’s unbeaten run and completed a streak that only 10 other players had previously achieved in LaLiga history.
A Record That Also Belongs in Deportivo’s History
The streak carries special significance within the club itself.
Aubameyang is only the third Deportivo La Coruña player to score in each of the first five matchdays of a single LaLiga season.
The first was Pahíño in the 1954-55 campaign.
Nearly half a century later, Walter Pandiani accomplished the feat during the 2003-04 season.
Now Aubameyang completes a list connecting three completely different eras of the Galician club.
In addition, Deportivo becomes the only club with three different players among the select group to have started a season by scoring in five consecutive matchdays.
Aubameyang Becomes the Leader of the New Deportivo
His impact goes well beyond the record.
After five matches, the striker has five goals and two assists and has been directly involved in a significant portion of the attacking production for Antonio Hidalgo’s side.
His experience has quickly become one of the pillars of a project whose first objective was to adapt to life back in the top flight.
The start has exceeded expectations.
Deportivo La Coruña remains unbeaten after five matchdays and is beginning to emerge as one of the stories of the early LaLiga season.
And much of that story revolves around its striker.
Aubameyang arrived in A Coruña at 37 after a career that took him through some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Five matchdays later, his age does not need to be the center of the conversation.
His numbers speak for themselves.
Five matches.
Five goals.
And a Zlatan Ibrahimovic record that nobody had managed to match since 2009.
