Atlético Madrid Announce First Summer Signing After Club World Cup Disappointment
The Spanish club have made their first move in the transfer window, bringing in Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta to reinforce the left-back position after an underwhelming Club World Cup campaign.
Ruggeri Joins To Fill A Problematic Position
Atlético Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri on a five-year contract, valid through June 2030. The 22-year-old arrives from Atalanta in a deal reportedly worth around €20 million, including bonuses, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Ruggeri, a Italy U21 international, becomes the first reinforcement for Diego Simeone's team ahead of the 2025–26 season. He leaves Atalanta after making 109 appearances for the first team and helping them win the 2023–24 Europa League.
The move addresses a clear need for Atlético, who struggled to find a consistent left-back last season. Several players, including Javi Galán, Reinildo Mandava, Samuel Lino, Rodrigo Riquelme, and César Azpilicueta, failed to claim the position definitively, prompting the club to prioritize this area early in the summer window.
Young Talent With Room To Grow
Standing at 1.87 meters, Ruggeri is known for his endurance, solid crossing ability, and physical presence. He came through Atalanta’s academy and made his professional debut in 2020. His breakthrough came during the 2023–24 season, where he played 48 matches (42 as a starter), scoring twice and providing five assists.
While he began the 2024–25 season as a key starter, his role diminished in the final stretch, starting only four of the last 21 matches. Still, Atlético see his long-term potential and believe he can develop into a key figure under Simeone.
The move also signals a fresh chapter for Atlético, who are looking to rebuild after their early exit from the Club World Cup and a season full of inconsistencies.
More Reinforcements Expected
In addition to Ruggeri, Atlético Madrid are finalizing deals for Álex Baena from Villarreal and Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. The club is also expected to target a center-back, winger, striker (with Ángel Correa likely to leave), and a right-back as part of a wider squad overhaul.
With Axel Witsel, César Azpilicueta, and Reinildo Mandava already confirmed to depart, the Rojiblancos are entering a busy summer aimed at rejuvenating the squad and reigniting Simeone’s long-term project.
The signing of Matteo Ruggeri marks the first step in that rebuild—one that fans hope leads the team back to the top both domestically and in Europe.
