We're underway in Udine! The first 45-minute match for FC Barcelona in the inaugural Friuli Venezia Giulia Cup is officially underway. A touching minute of silence is observed at the Stadio Friuli in memory of Jorge Messi, father of Lionel Messi and one of the key figures behind the Argentine star's career. Players, match officials and supporters pay their respects before kickoff.
FC Barcelona faces one of the most unique tests of its preseason this Saturday by taking part in the inaugural Friuli Venezia Giulia Cup, a triangular tournament that also features Nottingham Forest and Udinese.
The competition, which will be held in the Italian city of Udine, brings back a format rarely seen in modern football. Nottingham Forest and Udinese will open the tournament with a 45-minute match before Hansi Flick's side takes the field for two additional 45-minute games, first against the English club and then against the Italian hosts.
In total, Barcelona will play 90 minutes split across two separate matches, a format the club has not experienced in more than two decades.
A Format Returning After 24 Years
Although triangular tournaments were common during the 1980s and 1990s, FC Barcelona has not participated in one since 2001. The club's last true triangular was the tribute tournament honoring Urruti, while in the 2002 preseason the Blaugrana played two matches in the traditional Amsterdam Tournament.
Now, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Cup revives that format, allowing three clubs to compete on the same day while giving coaches an excellent opportunity to distribute playing time throughout their squads.
Flick Continues Fine-Tuning Barcelona
Beyond the results, Hansi Flick's primary objective will be to continue shaping his team's playing style ahead of the official start of the season.
The German manager is expected to use the triangular tournament to evaluate several players, test different tactical systems, and continue building a squad capable of competing for every major trophy.
There is also considerable anticipation surrounding the potential debuts of some of the club's newest signings, as well as the continued development of several young talents hoping to earn a place in the first team.

A Demanding Test Before the Season Begins
Both Nottingham Forest and Udinese will provide challenging opposition as Barcelona enters the final stretch of its preseason preparations.
With two matches scheduled on the same day, the coaching staff will have the opportunity to evaluate nearly the entire squad before the Joan Gamper Trophy and the beginning of the official campaign.
