Pirlo the Front-Runner to Lead the Rebuild
According to multiple European outlets, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has stepped up talks with Pirlo after concluding that moves for Guardiola and Ancelotti were no longer realistic.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner is now seen as the consensus choice to lead a long-term project with the 2028 UEFA European Championship and the 2030 FIFA World Cup firmly in sight.
While his coaching résumé is still developing, Pirlo has already managed Juventus, Fatih Karagümrük, Sampdoria, and most recently United FC in the United Arab Emirates. His understanding of Italian football, combined with his legendary status for the national team, makes him an attractive candidate.
Guardiola and Ancelotti No Longer in the Picture
The FIGC's initial priority was to appoint a manager with proven international pedigree.
Guardiola reportedly turned down a lucrative offer for personal reasons, as he intends to take a break from coaching following his successful spell with Manchester City in the Premier League. Before approaching the Spanish manager, the federation also explored the possibility of hiring Ancelotti, who chose to honor his commitment to Brazil.
Pirlo is now closing in on becoming Italy's next head coach. If appointed, he will face the challenge of rebuilding one of football's most historic national teams, with the goal of returning to the FIFA World Cup after missing the last three editions, reclaiming European glory at the UEFA European Championship, and competing for the UEFA Nations League title.
