UNICEF Joins 2026 World Cup Fever and Highlights Iconic Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal Photo
The United Nations Children’s Fund also praised the work of both football stars, who will compete for the World Cup title on Sunday, July 19.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina this Sunday comes more than 18 years after the iconic photo of Lionel Messi bathing Lamine Yamal when the Spanish star was only a few months old, an image that was part of a UNICEF charity calendar.
The organization recalled the historic moment today on its X account:
“More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mother Sheila met Lionel Messi during a UNICEF fundraising photo shoot.”
In its post, UNICEF highlighted that, away from the pitch, both Messi and Yamal “use their voices and platforms as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors to support and advocate for children around the world.”
