The FIFA Ranking has come to life at the World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup began with 48 teams, a long list of title contenders and plenty of room for surprises. Yet with only four nations remaining, the bracket now reflects an almost perfect order.

That coincidence turns the closing stages into a direct battle between the leading powers of the modern game, with no unexpected outsider or team that simply benefited from a favorable path.

Four champions and seven World Cup titles

The semifinalists' prestige goes far beyond their place in the ranking. All four countries know what it takes to lift the World Cup, and together they have won the tournament seven times.

Argentina leads the group with three titles, captured in 1978, 1986 and 2022. France lifted the trophy in 1998 and 2018, while England triumphed in 1966 and Spain reached the summit in 2010.

The lineup also brings together the key protagonists from the two biggest international tournaments of the previous cycle. Argentina arrives as the defending world champion, France was its opponent in the Qatar 2022 Final, and Spain and England contested the UEFA Euro 2024 decider.

These are not merely four teams enjoying a good run of form. They are champions, recent finalists and generations that have grown accustomed to competing under the greatest possible pressure.

France and Spain take their rivalry to the biggest stage

The first semifinal will see France face Spain on Tuesday, July 14, in Dallas. Despite their rich World Cup traditions, it will be only the second time the two nations have met in the tournament.

Their only previous World Cup encounter came in the Round of 16 at Germany 2006. Spain took the lead, but France responded through Franck Ribéry, Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane to claim a 3-1 victory.

More recent history favors La Roja. Spain eliminated France in the semifinals of Euro 2024 and defeated Les Bleus again in the UEFA Nations League, adding a clear element of revenge to their latest meeting.

The match will also bring together Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, two stars from different generations who now carry the responsibility of leading their countries at the decisive stage of the tournament.

France reached the semifinals after eliminating Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco without conceding a goal in the knockout stage. Spain, meanwhile, overcame Austria, Portugal and Belgium, defeating the Red Devils 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Argentina and England renew a World Cup classic

The second semifinal will bring Argentina and England together in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15, in a matchup forever linked to some of the most memorable moments in World Cup history.

Their 1986 quarterfinal in Mexico remains the most iconic chapter. Diego Maradona scored both the “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century” to send Argentina into the semifinals on the way to its second world title.

At France 1998, La Albiceleste prevailed again in a dramatic penalty shootout. England earned a measure of revenge four years later with a narrow victory during the group stage of the 2002 tournament.

This time, the spotlight will fall on Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. Argentina's captain continues to defend the crown won in Qatar, while England is attempting to reach its first World Cup Final since winning the tournament in 1966.

Argentina secured its place with a 3-1 victory over Switzerland, while England completed the semifinal field by defeating Norway 2-1.

Four different ways to survive a World Cup

Although all four teams entered the tournament among the leading contenders, their journeys have been very different.

France has shown the greatest defensive stability and an impressive ability to control its knockout matches. Spain has imposed its identity through possession, pressing and a generation that combines experienced players with fearless young talent.

Argentina has repeatedly relied on its competitive character to survive matches that became more difficult than expected. Lionel Scaloni's team has once again shown its ability to respond when a knockout tie enters emotional and unpredictable territory.

England has also advanced through resilience. Thomas Tuchel's side has had to manage tight scorelines, red cards, injuries and extra time before returning to the final four.

Each country followed a different path, but all four ultimately confirmed their status among the leading powers in international football.

The world's elite is fighting for one trophy

The 2026 World Cup semifinals feature the defending champion, the previous runner-up, the finalists from Euro 2024 and the top four teams in the FIFA Ranking.

They also bring together seven World Cup titles, some of the biggest stars from two generations and two matchups loaded with unfinished business.

One potential final would repeat the Qatar showdown between Argentina and France. Another could reunite Spain and England after the Euro 2024 Final. There is also the possibility of a title match between Messi and Lamine Yamal, or another major chapter in the rivalry between France and England.

At this stage, there is no meaningful distinction between favorites and challengers. All four semifinalists possess the history, current form and talent required to become world champions.

Only two will make it to July 19, but the bracket has already produced a statistic that may be difficult to repeat: the four best teams in the world have reached the final two matches of the road to glory.
