The Players With the Most Assists in World Cup History
While goals usually steal the spotlight, assists have also built some of the most memorable moments in FIFA World Cup history.
In the FIFA World Cup, goal scorers often receive the immediate glory, but behind many historic goals were footballers capable of changing a match with a pass, a cross, or a perfect reading of space. That is why the ranking of the tournament’s top assist providers also includes several legends who left their mark with their creativity and vision.
At the top of the list are two Argentine names: Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, both with eight World Cup assists. Different generations, but the same creative impact while wearing the shirt of Argentina.
Messi And Maradona Lead The Way
Lionel Messi is not only one of the top scorers in World Cup history, but he also shares the assists record. Since his first appearance in 2006, the Argentine captain has consistently shown his ability to create chances, whether setting up Hernán Crespo, Carlos Tevez, Ángel Di María, Nahuel Molina, or Julián Álvarez.
His influence was especially decisive in Qatar 2022, where he combined goals, assists, and leadership to guide Argentina to the World Cup title.
The other holder of the record is Diego Maradona, an eternal icon of Argentine football. In Mexico 1986, his creativity was just as important as his goals. Alongside his unforgettable individual plays, he delivered key assists, including the decisive pass for Jorge Burruchaga in the final against West Germany.

The German playmaker was an important figure in a generation that reached three consecutive World Cup finals, while the Polish legend played a key role in helping Poland shine during the 1970s and 1980s.
Players with six assists include historic names such as David Beckham, Francesco Totti, Pelé, Thomas Häßler, Thomas Müller, and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Each left their own unique mark on the tournament, from Beckham’s pinpoint crosses to Müller’s intelligence in space and the magic of Pelé with Brazil in Mexico 1970.
Another notable name is Robert Gadocha, who recorded five assists for Poland, including a memorable performance against Haiti at the 1974 World Cup.
