2026 World Cup Playoffs: Format, Structure and Participating Nations
The Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026 will mark a historic milestone in global football. For the first time, 48 national teams will compete, divided into 12 groups of four — a major expansion from the previous 32-team format.
Following the triumph of the Argentina national football team at the Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2022, anticipation is building for the next edition, which will feature an expanded playoff system to determine the final qualification spots.
How does the 2026 World Cup playoff work?
Due to the increased number of participating teams, the FIFA has introduced an expanded playoff structure.
A total of 18 national teams will compete:
- 6 teams in the intercontinental playoff.
- 12 teams in the UEFA playoff pathway.
The format will be single-elimination, one-leg matches, with semifinals and finals determining the qualified teams.

Finals (March 31, 2025):

- Iraq vs winner of Bolivia/Suriname
The winners will secure their place at the World Cup.
