Marcelo Bielsa delivers harsh verdict on his Uruguay tenure: "I leave nothing behind"
Marcelo Bielsa offered one of the most self-critical press conferences of his Uruguay tenure after La Celeste was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Marcelo Bielsa offered one of the most self-critical press conferences of his Uruguay tenure after La Celeste was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Following the defeat to Spain that ended Uruguay's campaign, the Argentine coach said his time in charge would leave no lasting legacy and explained two of the game's biggest talking points: Fernando Muslera's halftime exit and Federico Valverde's substitution.
"I leave nothing behind for Uruguayan football"
Asked how he believes his spell with Uruguay will be remembered, Bielsa gave a blunt response.
"What I leave to Uruguayan football is nothing because whatever contribution a coach can make during three years is never established if there are no results."
He added that neither Uruguay's fourth-place finish in World Cup qualifying nor its third-place finish at the Copa América was enough to validate the project.
"If you ask me how my time will be remembered, it will be remembered as a spell that left nothing."
Why did Fernando Muslera leave the match?
Bielsa also addressed the halftime substitution of veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who made a costly mistake on Spain's goal.
According to the coach, the decision came from the player himself.
"Muslera decided to come off at halftime."
He also explained replacing Federico Valverde with Federico Viñas.
"I wanted to add more attacking power based on the characteristics of the player coming in and the one going out."
A disappointing World Cup campaign
Uruguay's loss to Spain confirmed a group-stage exit, a result that fell well short of the expectations surrounding one of South America's most talented squads.
The team was unable to turn its quality into results throughout the tournament.
Bielsa's difficult World Cup record
The elimination also extended Bielsa's disappointing World Cup history.
He was eliminated in the group stage once again, repeating what happened with Argentina at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
His best World Cup finish remains reaching the Round of 16 with Chile at South Africa 2010.
Across three World Cups, Bielsa has managed 10 matches, recording three wins, three draws and four defeats.
