Italy in Crisis: Bonus Controversy Before World Cup Failure Shakes the Azzurri
The Italy national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup sparks internal turmoil after reports of a controversial bonus request before the decisive clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
The failure of the Italy national team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup continues to generate fallout, now intensified by a financial controversy within the squad. According to La Repubblica, several players requested a bonus of up to €300,000 just days before the decisive playoff match against Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. The amount would have been split among the squad, equating to roughly €10,000 per player for securing qualification.
The request was immediately rejected by then-head coach Gennaro Gattuso, who made it clear that rewards should be earned through results, not negotiated beforehand. Known for his intense competitive spirit, Gattuso reportedly viewed the demand as a sign of poor focus during a crucial moment for the national team.
The outcome seemed to validate his stance. Italy suffered elimination after a painful penalty shootout defeat in Zenica, deepening an already growing crisis. In the aftermath, several senior players attempted to convince Gattuso to remain in charge, but he stood firm and chose to step down following the catastrophic failure.
The collapse extended beyond the bench. The crisis escalated at the institutional level, with federation president Gabriele Gravina and delegation chief Gianluigi Buffon both resigning. Italian football now faces a full-scale rebuild after missing a third consecutive World Cup.
The bonus controversy has only fueled criticism of the squad’s mentality, with many pointing to a lack of humility compared to past generations. With its reputation damaged, the focus now shifts to structural reform, new leadership, and a refreshed squad in an effort to restore pride and avoid further historic embarrassment.
