Huge Drama in Curaçao as Dick Advocaat Returns to the Bench One Month Before the World Cup
The Curaçao national team is going through days of tension and uncertainty following the unexpected resignation of Fred Rutten and the imminent return of Dick Advocaat, who could take charge again just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Less than a month before their World Cup debut, Curaçao finds itself in the middle of major internal turmoil after the resignation of Fred Rutten opened the door for the return of veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat.
The situation shocked many around the Caribbean side, especially after the federation had publicly rejected any possibility of Advocaat returning just days earlier.
However, pressure from several key players and sponsors reportedly changed the entire situation behind the scenes.
Rutten’s Exit Shakes Curaçao
The departure of Fred Rutten came after growing tension inside the national team setup. Although the federation stated that the coach was not directly responsible for the internal conflict, the Dutch manager ultimately chose to step aside in order to protect the atmosphere within the squad.

In an official statement, Rutten explained that maintaining unity ahead of the World Cup was more important than continuing amid the controversy.
The resignation represents a major disruption for a Curaçao side preparing for its historic first-ever World Cup appearance. A coaching change so close to the tournament raises concerns regarding tactical preparation and the emotional stability of the squad.
Dick Advocaat Returns to Lead the World Cup Dream
Everything now points toward the comeback of Dick Advocaat, the experienced manager who guided Curaçao to its first qualification for a FIFA World Cup.
The 78-year-old coach stepped down in February in order to care for his daughter during a difficult health situation, but reports indicate her condition has improved, making his return possible.
In addition to having the backing of several important players, Advocaat also appears to enjoy strong support from influential figures around the national team. His leadership and international experience are viewed as crucial ahead of a demanding tournament.
If officially confirmed, the Dutchman would become the oldest head coach ever to manage at a FIFA World Cup, adding another milestone to his long managerial career.
Curaçao will open its World Cup campaign on June 14 against Germany in Houston before facing Ecuador and Ivory Coast in what promises to be a difficult group stage.
Despite the excitement surrounding the nation’s first appearance on football’s biggest stage, the team now heads into the tournament surrounded by controversy, instability, and enormous pressure.
