How is qualification determined at the 2026 World Cup if two teams are tied on points? FIFA's tiebreaker criteria
The 2026 World Cup group stage could leave teams level on points. Learn about FIFA’s official tiebreaker criteria and how it determines which team advances to the next round.
The group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 can create scenarios in which two or more national teams finish with the same number of points. In those cases, FIFA applies a series of tiebreaker criteria to determine which teams advance to the next round.
Goal difference: the first key criterion
The first element FIFA uses to break a tie is goal difference, calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored across all group-stage matches.
For example, a team that scored six goals and conceded three would have a goal difference of +3, while another that scored five and conceded four would have a goal difference of +1. The team with the better goal difference will be ranked higher.
Goals Scored
If two teams remain level on points and goal difference, the next criterion is the highest number of goals scored.
The logic behind this rule is to reward teams that play a more attacking style of football. Therefore, a team that has scored more goals during the group stage will have the advantage over another with a lower scoring record.
