Former Portugal Boss Admits Relationship With Cristiano Deteriorated
Paulo Bento admitted that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo changed during their time together with Portugal and said he was never willing to abandon his principles as a coach.
Former Portugal manager Paulo Bento has admitted that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo deteriorated during their time together with the national team between 2010 and 2014. The coach insisted that he was never willing to compromise his principles or give up authority, even when dealing with a player of Ronaldo’s stature.
Speaking on the Hora Bolas programme on Antena 1, Bento acknowledged that the dynamic between him and Cristiano changed over the years.
“If you ask me whether the relationship was the same as at the beginning, it wasn’t,” the Portuguese coach admitted.
Bento explained that, as a manager, he believed it was essential to maintain authority inside the dressing room and make independent decisions without being influenced by the status of star players.
“If I have to give up principles to maintain a relationship… no. It’s not about stubbornness, it’s about conviction. Coaches are paid to make decisions. If we let others make decisions for us, then we are being dishonest with the people who pay us,” he said. The former Portugal boss also elaborated on his leadership philosophy and the importance of establishing clear boundaries within the squad.
“The players have to know who has the power in the dressing room. From the moment they don’t know, everything is over or close to being over,” he explained. Bento added that during his own playing career, he never questioned a coach over not being selected, although he understands players wanting explanations.
“As a player, I never asked a coach why I wasn’t playing. That doesn’t mean they can’t ask and that I can’t try to explain,” he commented.
Paulo Bento managed Portugal from 2010 to 2014, a period in which Cristiano Ronaldo was at the peak of his powers. Under Bento, Portugal reached the semifinals of Euro 2012 and also competed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The former coach’s comments once again highlight the challenges of managing elite stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and the delicate balance between leadership, authority and harmony inside a top-level dressing room.
