Cyle Larin, the Hero Who Put Canada on the Football Map
The 32-year-old striker once again proved that his goals are invaluable to the Maple Leafs, delivering another historic moment for Canadian soccer on the world stage.
While Canada fell short of victory in its FIFA World Cup 2026 debut as a host nation, there was still plenty to celebrate after securing the first World Cup point in the country’s history. Much of that joy was owed to Cyle Larin, a player who has repeatedly delivered some of the most important moments in Canadian soccer.
THE PERFECT SUPER-SUB
The Southampton striker entered the match in the 76th minute and needed just 124 seconds to find the back of the net, scoring with his first touch of the game to level the score against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The goal made Larin the fastest substitute scorer in Canadian World Cup history and spared the hosts from defeat in front of their home crowd in Toronto.
Among CONCACAF substitutes at the World Cup, Larin’s strike ranks as the fourth-fastest ever, trailing only El Salvador’s Tony Laing, who scored 96 seconds after entering against Ireland at Spain 1982; Costa Rica’s Marco Ureña, who needed 100 seconds against Uruguay at Brazil 2014; and the United States’ Julian Green, who struck after 106 seconds against Belgium in the same tournament.
NO LARIN, NO PARTY
The goal was the 31st of Larin’s international career, moving him within eight of Canada’s all-time leading scorer, Jonathan David.
Several of Larin’s goals have become landmark moments in Canadian football history. This latest strike delivered the nation’s first-ever World Cup point after seven matches across three tournament appearances.
His list of memorable contributions also includes goals during Canada’s historic qualification campaign for Qatar 2022, including victories over Honduras in Vancouver, Jamaica in Toronto, and Haiti in Port-au-Prince, as well as a decisive brace against Mexico in Edmonton. He also scored crucial goals to help Canada avoid defeat against Honduras and the United States during the same qualifying cycle.
Now, on football’s biggest stage, Larin ended a scoring drought that stretched nearly two years, dating back to a 2-1 friendly victory over Panama on October 15, 2024. The goal could prove vital in restoring his confidence and sharpness as the tournament progresses.
