40 Years Since Maradona’s Masterpiece Against England
On June 22, 1986, Diego Maradona delivered one of the greatest performances in football history. Four decades later, the world still remembers the "Hand of God" and the unforgettable "Goal of the Century."
Forty years have passed since Diego Maradona produced one of football's greatest individual performances during Argentina's quarterfinal victory over England at the 1986 World Cup.
The match carried enormous significance beyond football. The Falklands War had taken place only four years earlier, creating additional emotional tension between both nations.
Maradona first scored the controversial "Hand of God" goal in the 51st minute, using his left hand to beat goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The referee allowed the goal, and it quickly became one of the most debated moments in football history.
Only four minutes later came the "Goal of the Century." Maradona dribbled more than 50 meters from his own half, beating five English defenders before scoring past the goalkeeper.
The legendary commentary by Víctor Hugo Morales became immortal alongside the goal itself, turning the play into a symbol of football greatness.
Forty years later, Maradona's performance at the Azteca Stadium remains one of the greatest displays ever seen in a World Cup, ensuring his place among the sport's eternal legends.
