Wehen Wiesbaden 2-3 Bayern Munich: Kane Spares Visitors’ Blushes With Last-Gasp Winner
With extra time looming in their DFB-Pokal first-round clash, Bayern Munich found a late winner courtesty of Harry Kane.
Harry Kane left it late to send Bayern Munich through to the second round of the DFB-Pokal, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory over Wehen Wiesbaden.
Bayern Take Early Control
The 3. Liga side looked poised to force extra time after fighting back from two goals down, but Kane’s decisive intervention spared Bayern from embarrassment.
The hosts survived an early penalty scare for a possible handball against Jordy Gillekens, but Bayern soon went ahead from the spot. In the 16th minute, Ryan Johansson brought down Sacha Boey in the box, and Kane calmly converted from 12 yards into the bottom-right corner.
Luis Diaz forced a fine save from Florian Stritzel, while Raphael Guerreiro’s effort was also pushed away. Shortly after the break, Michael Olise doubled the lead, sweeping home after capitalizing on a loose ball.
Wiesbaden Fight Back
Despite falling behind, Wiesbaden mounted a comeback through their captain, Fatih Kaya, who scored twice in six minutes. He slid in at the far post to cut the deficit in the 64th minute before breaking Bayern’s high line and drilling past Jonas Urbig to equalize.
Kane then earned another penalty after being brought down by Milad Nejad, but his attempt was denied by Stritzel, who saved low to his left and stopped the rebound before Justin Janitzek cleared off the line.
Kane’s Decisive Moment
The fairytale for Wiesbaden was not to be. In stoppage time, Kane rose highest to meet Josip Stanisic’s cross and headed past Stritzel in the 94th minute, sending Bayern into the second round.
Data Debrief: Bayern Survive Scare
Bayern registered 22 shots worth 3.87 expected goals, with Stritzel making 10 saves from 15 attempts on target. Wiesbaden scored with both of their shots on target, but it was Kane who had the final word.
The England captain, who scored 12 goals in the DFB-Pokal last season, has now been directly involved in four goals in his last three matches in the competition (three goals, one assist).
