Lanús Comes from Behind to Beat LDU Quito, the Reigning Sudamericana Champions
Lanús pulled off a comeback on the road against LDU Quito, the reigning CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana champions, securing a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16.
LDU Quito came out strong at home, determined to defend their champion status, and they took the lead in the 14th minute with a powerful header from Alex Arce in the Argentine box.
But the Argentinians didn’t back down. Just 10 minutes later, Gonzalo Pérez equalized, and with LDU Quito retreating, Lanús seized control, completing the comeback in the 45+1 minute with a swift counterattack by Dylan Aquino, finished off by Marcelino Moreno.
With this result, LDU Quito will need to go to Argentina and overturn the aggregate score if they want to keep their dream of a Copa Sudamericana repeat alive, while Lanús will look to defend their slim lead to advance to the Quarterfinals.
