How Serious Is Neymar’s Injury and When Will He Return to Action?
The Brazilian star is facing another frustrating spell on the sidelines after suffering a new muscle injury. Here are all the details.
Neymar is set to miss several weeks after suffering a muscle injury, raising concerns at Santos with the Brazilian forward sidelined during a crucial part of the season. The diagnosis has been confirmed, although there is still no official return date.
WHAT INJURY DOES NEYMAR HAVE?
Tests carried out on Neymar after the match against Palmeiras revealed a type 2B muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his right thigh. The Brazilian felt discomfort during the first half of the Copa do Brasil match and was substituted before halftime.
The injury involves a partial tear of muscle fibers at the junction between the muscle and tendon. This type of injury generally requires four to eight weeks of recovery, with the latest reports suggesting Neymar could be closer to the longer end of that range.
The setback is particularly concerning because it is his second Grade 2 muscle injury of 2026. In May, he suffered a right calf injury that kept him out for approximately five weeks.
WHEN COULD NEYMAR RETURN?
Based on the current prognosis, Neymar could return between late October and early November 2026. One estimate places his potential comeback around October 31, although that is not an official medical clearance or a confirmed date from Santos.
His recovery will depend on how the injury responds to treatment. While a four-week recovery could allow him to return sooner, an eight-week timeline currently appears to be the more cautious scenario.
Neymar has already indicated that he has begun his rehabilitation process, sharing a photo on social media related to his recovery work. His goal is to return as soon as possible, but avoiding a premature comeback will be key.

COPA SUDAMERICANA IS THE FIRST COMPETITION AFFECTED
Neymar’s absence already has a confirmed consequence: he will miss Santos’ Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal against Atlético Mineiro.
Santos will play the two legs on September 9 and 16, while Neymar is expected to still be recovering. If Santos advances, he could also miss a potential semifinal depending on his recovery timeline.
His absence is a major blow for Santos. The forward has featured in five of the team’s 10 matches in this edition of the Sudamericana and has recorded six goals and three assists in 12 Brasileirao appearances in 2026.
ANOTHER SETBACK IN A CAREER PLAGUED BY INJURIES
The latest injury once again highlights Neymar’s struggle to maintain consistency since returning to Santos. Following the serious knee injury he suffered in 2023, muscle problems have become one of the biggest obstacles to regaining regular playing time.
This latest setback came after a difficult night for Santos, who were eliminated from the Copa do Brasil by Palmeiras. After the match, Neymar questioned the condition of the Vila Belmiro pitch on social media, suggesting that the poor playing surface may have contributed to the discomfort experienced by several players.
For now, however, the focus is entirely on his recovery. The injury is significant but does not represent a long-term setback on the scale of his previous knee injury.
The current prognosis points to four to eight weeks on the sidelines, with late October or early November emerging as the most likely return window.
For Neymar, completing his rehabilitation and avoiding a setback will be the priority. After another interruption to his season, returning in full condition will be far more important than rushing back early.
