What Does Philippe Coutinho Have to Do With Neymar, Santos and the 2026 Copa Sudamericana?
The two veteran footballers have taken center stage in Brazilian soccer. Here’s everything you need to know.
Philippe Coutinho is reportedly close to becoming a new Santos player in a move that would allow him to reunite with Neymar. Although the Brazilian media are treating the transfer as virtually a done deal, and Neymar has seemingly already welcomed his compatriot while dropping several hints, the club has yet to officially present him. Therefore, the deal cannot yet be considered finalized.
The 34-year-old midfielder is currently a free agent following his departure from Vasco da Gama and, according to reports from Brazil, still needs to complete the required medical examinations. The intention is for Coutinho to sign through the end of the season.
Coutinho's arrival has a clear objective: to add quality, experience and depth to Santos as they compete for the Copa Sudamericana.
Neymar's "Welcome" to Coutinho at Santos
The signs pointing to Philippe Coutinho's arrival at Santos grew stronger after Neymar publicly welcomed him. The Brazilian forward shared a message on social media for his compatriot, expressing his excitement about having Coutinho at the Peixe.
"Brother, we are very happy that you're here. Our squad and our fans are going to embrace you."
Coutinho was also spotted in the stands during Santos' victory over Cruzeiro, a presence that further fueled speculation about his potential move to the club.
Neymar's camp has also dropped hints about the transfer. NR Sports, the agency representing the Santos star, is reportedly involved in the negotiations surrounding the potential signing.
Coutinho and Neymar: A Friendship That Began in Brazil
The potential arrival of Philippe Coutinho at Santos carries special significance because of his long-standing relationship with Neymar. The two players have known each other since the Brazilian youth national teams and shared the dressing room during different stages of their careers with the Canarinha.
Now, after following different paths through international football, they could play together again at Santos, the historic club where Neymar established himself as a global superstar.
Neymar himself raised expectations by posting a welcome message for Coutinho. The Brazilian star shared images of the midfielder alongside members of the Peixe coaching staff and wrote a message addressed to his longtime teammate.
Their relationship extends beyond the national team. Coutinho's potential move is also reportedly connected to Neymar's professional circle, with his agency and management team playing an important role in managing the forward's career and commercial agreements.
However, this does not mean the transfer is officially complete. Until Santos announces the signing and Coutinho completes his medical procedures, the midfielder remains a potential addition who is close to joining the club but has not yet been officially confirmed.
Coutinho Would Bring International Experience to Santos
If the deal is eventually completed, Santos would add a player with an impressive international résumé. Coutinho has played for Inter Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, before later representing Aston Villa and returning to Brazil with Vasco da Gama.
During his last full season with Vasco, Coutinho recorded 11 goals and five assists in 56 appearances across all competitions.
In 2026, before his departure, he scored one goal in three Brasileirão appearances and added two goals and one assist in four matches in the Rio de Janeiro state championship.
His career has also been affected by injuries and a lack of continuity. In February, Vasco announced the termination of his contract, while Coutinho said he was "mentally exhausted," a situation that led to his temporary absence from football.
Now, Santos could offer Coutinho an opportunity to make a fresh start.
Santos Is Betting Big on the Copa Sudamericana
Coutinho's potential signing is part of Santos' strategy to strengthen its squad during the final stretch of the season.
The Peixe had already added players such as Arthur Melo, Éverton Cebolinha, Lima and Rodinei, looking to increase competition within the squad and bring in additional experience.
The club's main challenge is the Copa Sudamericana, a tournament in which Santos wants to advance and compete for the title. Coutinho would bring creativity, playmaking ability and experience in high-pressure situations.
The prospect of reuniting with Neymar is another major attraction for Santos supporters. Two players who were teammates with Brazil's youth national teams and later with the senior side could once again share the pitch.
For now, caution is still required: Philippe Coutinho has not been officially presented by Santos. Nevertheless, reports from the Brazilian media and Neymar's public signals suggest that the midfielder is getting increasingly close to joining the Peixe.
If the transfer is completed, Santos will have another important piece in its bid to achieve its biggest objective: win the Copa Sudamericana and finish the season with a trophy.
