The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) confirmed to EFE this Thursday that it is investigating whether the Dutchman Memphis Depay, a player for Corinthians, made obscene gestures to the fans of Estudiantes de La Plata during the match on Wednesday between both clubs in the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The governing body of South American football opened a disciplinary file on the Dutch attacker after the Argentine team, four-time Copa Libertadores winner, filed a formal complaint demanding sanctions against the Brazilian team's player.

Videos widely circulated on social media show Depay making what appears to be an offensive gesture to the Estudiantes fans, with the middle finger of his right hand raised, after player Kaio César equalized the match in the 49th minute of play.

This Thursday, Corinthians reported that it received a notification of the opening of a case for the possible violation of literals "C" and "U" of the Conmebol Disciplinary Code, related to acceptable behavior on the field.

In a post on their social media, 'Timao' indicated that Conmebol set September 17 as the deadline for the defense's presentation, so the player will be available for the return leg of the series one day earlier at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo.

The violation of these guidelines does not have specific sanctions, but the organization's Disciplinary Commission can determine punishments based on the severity of the offenses. EFE
