How Much Money Does the Copa Libertadores Champion Earn?
Atlético Mineiro vs. Botafogo: The champion of the tournament will pocket this astronomical sum just for winning the final. What would you do with so many millions?
The final match of the 2024 Copa Libertadores will be "the best-paid in the world," offering a prize of $23 million to the champion, as announced last March by the president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), Alejandro Domínguez.
"The final of this year's Copa Libertadores will award the champion $23 million, regardless of the earnings accumulated throughout the competition," Domínguez confirmed.
He also revealed that Conmebol is increasing the champion’s prize for this centennial tournament by $5 million, with the final set to be contested between Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo.
As a result, Domínguez added, the Copa Libertadores final will become "the best-paid match in the world" or "the match with the largest prize" starting this year.
The head of South America's football governing body made this announcement during a ceremony in Luque, Paraguay, where the group stage draws for the Libertadores and Sudamericana cups took place.
Domínguez highlighted that since he took charge of Conmebol in 2016, the total prize money for both tournaments has grown from $70 million to "a record $316 million to be distributed during this cycle across both championships."
