VIDEO | Spectacular Fire Forces Suspension of Southampton Match
A spectacular fire near the Saint Mary's Stadium forced the FA Cup to postpone the Championship match between the "Potters" and Preston North End.
The match between Southampton and Preston North End, from the Championship (English Second Division), has been postponed due to a fire originating in a factory near St. Mary's Stadium.
A factory located in front of Southampton's stadium caught fire on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant disruptions in the area. Local authorities recommended residents to stay away from the area and close their windows to avoid smoke inhalation.
Southampton, in a statement, announced that after consulting with various entities, they have decided to postpone the match to a new date yet to be specified.
"We are very grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, while understanding the inconvenience to fans. We hope they understand that we have to prioritize the safety of fans and club staff above all else," they said.
