The Unusual Measure to be Implemented at EURO 2024
UEFA aims to reduce protests against referees during EURO 2024. Through its chief referee, Roberto Rosetti, UEFA announced a measure where only the team captain will be allowed to approach the referee when a difficult decision needs to be made.
If players from either team protest to the referee, they will be cautioned. Rosetti explained that this rule is intended to prevent having to explain controversial decisions to eleven players simultaneously. Moreover, if protests continue, the team captain will receive a card for failing to control his teammates.
In cases where the team captain is the goalkeeper and is far from the play to engage with the referee, a designated player will represent the captain if the action occurs away from the team's goal.
Rosetti also discussed the technology to be used during the tournament, including semi-automatic offside detection, VAR, goal-line technology, and an intelligent ball from Adidas that can indicate the exact moment the ball is struck. Additionally, all interventions will be communicated to the public via stadium video screens and television broadcasts.
Finally, Rosetti emphasized that holding within the penalty area during set-pieces like free kicks and corners will not be tolerated, and referees will be strict in enforcing this rule.
