Kimmich Doesn't Rule Out Joining Barcelona Next Summer
Bayern Munich player Joshua Kimmich has said that in football, “you can never rule things out,” referring to a possible interest from Barcelona to sign him next summer. The two teams are set to face off in the Champions League soon.
“In football, you can't make the mistake of dismissing things. I'm not thinking about what I'll do next season, but you can never rule anything out in football,” the German international mentioned at the press conference before the third matchday of the group stage.
Despite Barcelona's supposed interest, the German midfielder revealed that he is currently studying French and has put Spanish on hold, a language he started learning a few years ago.
Kimmich, whose contract with Bayern runs until June 2025, clarified that playing against Barcelona isn’t special just because of the potential interest from the Catalan club but because he’s facing a team with “a lot of tradition” and reuniting with Hansi Flick, the coach under whom he won all six titles in 2020.
“Hansi (Flick) believed in us, and we played spectacular football that worked well for us,” he recalled about his time at Bayern Munich with the current Barcelona manager.
Kimmich noted that the current Bayern team is similar “in atmosphere and play” to Flick’s team, but he emphasized that the goal is to win titles, which they haven't achieved yet.
Playing against Barcelona will be special for Kimmich because one of his childhood idols, Xavi Hernández, played for the Catalan club.
“The Barça and the Spanish national team have left a mark on me. Xavi Hernández has been my idol since I was a kid. When Pep Guardiola was the coach of Barcelona, he made a little revolution by dominating opponents. It's a model for many clubs to follow,” he concluded.
