James Rodríguez: A Future in African Football?
James Rodríguez, the talented Colombian midfielder, continues to generate buzz in the transfer market following his impressive performance in the Copa América 2024. After finishing his contract with São Paulo in Brazil, Rodríguez has attracted interest from clubs around the globe.
Recently, an intriguing option has emerged from Africa. Wydad Casablanca, one of Morocco's top clubs, has expressed strong interest in signing Rodríguez. According to journalist Hanif Ben Berkane of L’Équipe, the Moroccan club is already in talks with Rodríguez's agent, Jorge Mendes, to finalize a potential transfer.
Wydad Casablanca is prepared to make a significant financial effort to secure the Colombian midfielder. Additionally, the club is not only targeting Rodríguez; they have also shown interest in Mario Balotelli, the Italian forward with experience at Manchester City, AC Milan, and Liverpool. The addition of both players could mark a transformative moment for the Moroccan team.
On the other hand, not all news is favorable for Rodríguez. In Italy, Lazio has ruled out the possibility of signing him. The club's sporting director stated that, despite Rodríguez's strong performance in the Copa América, his overall performance in recent years and his injury history led Lazio to dismiss the idea of bringing him on board. At 33 years old, Rodríguez has struggled to maintain fitness and play regularly in recent times.
