Fenerbahce Get Closer To The Conference's Quarterfinals
Belgian Michy Batshuayi, Dutchman Jayden Oosterwolde, and Serbian Dusan Tadic, in injury time, secured a victory at the Lotto Park stadium in Brussels against Union St. Gilloise from Fenerbahce (0-3), bringing them closer to the quarter-finals of the Conference League.
Oosterwolde's goal, taking advantage of a ball received from Bosnian Edin Dzeko five minutes before the end, to beat local goalkeeper Anthony Moris for the second time, ultimately sunk the Belgian representative, who failed to capitalize on their chances and closed the match with a poor score that distances them from the European tournament.
The game tilted in favor of Fenerbahce after twenty minutes when Batshuayi capitalized on the clearance by a local defender to unleash a powerful shot into the net.
With the lead, Fenerbahce felt comfortable for the rest of the match. Despite Alexander Blessin's team's attempts to react, Fenerbahce did not suffer excessively and took advantage of every opportunity to extend their lead. They did so in the 84th minute with Oosterwolde's goal and in injury time when a handball inside the penalty area by Christian Burgess resulted in the penalty converted by Serbian Dusan Tadic, almost sealing the face-off.
Next Thursday, in Istanbul, Fenerbahce will host St. Gilloise to conclude the tie and secure a spot in the quarter-finals for the winner.
