Carvajal Addresses Racism and Vinicius
Dani Carvajal talked about racism and his teammate, Vinícius Jr., just hours before the friendly match between Spain and Brazil.
Carvajal praised his fellow Real Madrid teammate and Tuesday's opponent with the Brazilian national team, Vinícius Junior, highlighting the evolution he has undergone to become a role model and his ability to overcome criticism during moments of poor performance in front of goal.
"He surprised me a lot in a positive way. He arrived very young, started gradually under Solari and also under Julen (Lopetegui). The improvement he has shown has been spectacular. Those of us on the inside never
doubted his game, but he received a lot of criticism when he wasn't accurate in front of goal," he reflected.
"It was said that he couldn't score, and with so much criticism at Real Madrid, not many players have been able to overcome this. I've seen it, and that's why I praise him so much because he has been able to rise above it, and right now he is one of our leaders," he added.
The Spain-Brazil friendly comes amidst the unity of two of the world's most powerful national teams against racism. Carvajal believes that his country is not racist, but he regrets that in football there are people who
unleash all their anger with insults that need to stop.
"It's an ideal scenario and match to address this problem in the fight against racism. It's not a comfortable topic for Vinícius; he will discuss it in his more private circles, and as far as we are concerned in the dressing room, we help him as much as we can," he said.
"I don't think Spain is a racist country; we have a very high level of integration. I come from a humble neighborhood in Leganés, I grew up with kids from many nationalities without any problem, I have friends with
different skin colors. Unfortunately, there are people who go to football matches to release their anger and rage. It's a shame. Hopefully, those kinds of people won't be able to enter stadiums because it's the ugliest thing you
see in sports," he added.
Carvajal faces the challenging task of stopping Vinícius with his marking at the Santiago Bernabéu. "Against a player of that caliber, it's difficult to have clear instructions. With that talent, he is capable of dribbling past anyone. We have to try to stay close to him, not leave spaces, and get help," he pointed out as keys.
