Will Messi Play Against la Galaxy? Here’s What’s Known About His Return With Inter Miami
The possible return of Lionel Messi is the biggest storyline ahead of the clash between Inter Miami and LA Galaxy in Matchday 29 of the MLS. The Argentine star, sidelined in recent games with a muscle injury, could be back in action and part of Javier Mascherano’s squad.
The injury that kept him out
On August 2, Messi suffered a muscle issue in his leg early in the Leagues Cup match against Necaxa. Since then, he has missed the 3-1 win over Pumas UNAM that sent the pink side into the tournament’s quarterfinals, as well as the 4-1 MLS loss to Orlando City.
The absence of the Argentine captain has been felt in the team’s performances, as they fight to stay in the direct playoff qualification spots. Inter Miami currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with 42 points from 23 matches, while leaders Philadelphia Union have 51 points from 26 games.
Optimism for Inter Miami, urgency for the Galaxy
In a press conference, Mascherano confirmed that Messi trained normally throughout the week and, barring any setbacks, will be in the squad to face LA Galaxy. The match is set for tomorrow and could mark the star’s return to the pitch.
Meanwhile, LA Galaxy is enduring a season to forget. Despite being the reigning MLS Cup champions, they are bottom of the Western Conference with just 16 points from 25 matches and only three wins. Injuries—most notably the prolonged absence of Riqui Puig—have been key to their struggles.
Their only bright spot has been the Leagues Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals and will fight for a semifinal berth against Pachuca.
The showdown between Inter Miami and LA Galaxy will not only test Messi’s fitness but also give Mascherano’s men a chance to regain confidence after their latest loss, while the LA side will look to pull off an upset in a season full of setbacks.
