Boca Juniors Strengthens its Defense with a European Signing
Boca Juniors has kicked off 2025 with significant moves in the transfer market, and their latest addition promises to bring quality and experience to the defense. The Xeneize club confirmed the arrival of Ayrton Costa, a 25-year-old Argentine defender who was playing for Royal Antwerp in Belgium. The center-back, trained at Independiente, joins Fernando Gago's team for a fee of around 3.5 million dollars, securing 100% of his rights.
Costa, who can play both as a central defender and a left-back, arrives to fill a crucial position after the departure of Aaron Anselmino to Chelsea and the prolonged injury of Nicolás Figal. The new signing’s mission is to strengthen a defense that has suffered important losses in recent months. His contract will bind him to Boca until December 2027, and in the coming days, he will undergo medical tests in Argentina before joining the squad.
During his time in Belgian football, Ayrton Costa played 16 matches across the league and the Belgian Cup, showing defensive solidity and versatility on the field. This signing also addresses Gago's need for alternatives on the left side of the defense, where Marcos Rojo was the only reliable option after Nicolás Valentini's departure. Costa’s European experience and ability to adapt to different defensive roles make him an exciting addition for the season.
Meanwhile, the club's management, led by Juan Román Riquelme, continues working on more reinforcements to refresh the squad. In addition to Costa, Boca has already signed Chilean forward Carlos Palacios and is looking at players such as William Alarcón and Rodrigo Battaglia to strengthen the midfield, an area weakened by the departure of Pol Fernández. Other notable names include Argentine forward Alan Velasco, though negotiations with FC Dallas in MLS are still ongoing.
With the signing of Ayrton Costa, Boca aims to build a competitive team not only for local competitions but also to overcome the preliminary stages of the Copa Libertadores. The Xeneize club is focused on assembling a solid and balanced squad to be a key player this season and face the major challenges ahead.
